Makins Fishery, Leicestershire
Makins Fishery is one of the original commercial fisheries in the UK, developed by Billy Makin in 1988! The venue is spread across three different phases and has a total of 14 lakes that offer an incredible 510 pegs.
The variety here is simply phenomenal, and you can quite literally pick whatever method or species you wish to target on the complex and enjoy amazing year-round sport whatever takes your fancy. All the lakes are available for match bookings, and regular open matches, qualifiers, festivals and events are ran across the whole complex all year around. Makins is home to our Guru Match Academy Final, and the Guru Talent Pathway, which make up just a couple of the many youth events ran here.
Phase One of the complex is where the biggest lakes are, offering large open waters with islands, bars and features all within casting range. These lakes all hold a lot of big carp that make up the majority of summer sport, and huge heads of quality silvers that anglers flock to target in the winter. Lake One in particular has become more of a specimen water, with carp to over 30lb and lots of 20lb fish, offering loads of spacious swims for the specimen angler to get comfortable on.
Phase Two has a great mix of lakes, including some bigger open water and island pools such as Lizzard, Lagoon and Reptile, plus some narrower lakes ideal for pole fishing in the shape of Paddock and Snake. There are all sizes of carp in these waters, from a couple of pound to well above double figures, alongside roach, tench, bream, skimmers, rudd and perch. Quite a few anglers enjoy targeting the venues big perch in the cooler months, and it has produced lots of 3lb plus fish.
Phase Three is home to the smaller lakes that are well-suited to pole fishing, with islands and far banks withing close reach, and loads of corners, bends, gaps and features to go at throughout. Again, carp are the main quarry for anglers in the summer, but there are silvers throughout these lakes too. Severn, Avon, Thames and Derwent are all popular in both matches and for pleasure fishing, and are well sheltered in stunning surroundings.
Phase One of the fishery hosts a lovely café serving breakfasts, lunches and refreshments throughout the year, alongside the venue’s tackle shop that is very well stocked and supplies quality tackle and bait. There is plentiful up-market accommodation on-site, with multiple luxury lodges that are simply stunning inside and out, all overlooking the lakes with all facilities provided including hot tubs, king sized beds, fully equipped kitchens, and beautiful views. There are also camping and touring caravan areas on site with full facilities, a kids play area, all overlooking the lakes.
Whatever fishing you are into, from serious match angling to specimen work, or relaxed pleasure sport, Makins Fishery has something magical to offer everyone. In a perfect central location with great access, it’s a place you need to visit if you are yet to do so!
